What if your pet becomes lost or injured while you're on vacation? No one likes to think it could happen, but it's a good idea to prepare for emergencies. Effective planning can give your pet the best odds in an emergency situation.

Your pet should always wear a collar or harness with identification containing his or her name and your vacation contact information. In the event that you and your pet become separated, the collar will allow someone to restrain your pet and contact you as soon as possible.

Keep your pet's vaccinations up to date. Your pet may be exposed to infected animals or parasites, especially if he or she is separated from you. Vaccinations will help him or her ward off infection. Check with your veterinarian before embarking on your trip to determine whether your pet needs additional vaccinations for your destination. Ask for a copy of your pet's medical records in case they need to be provided to another veterinarian while you're traveling.

If your pet has any allergies or health conditions for which medication is required, ensure you have enough medication to last at least a few days beyond the expected end date of your vacation. in case your return home is delayed.

Create or purchase a first aid kit for your pet. Kits for sale often include instructions for basic first aid and resuscitation techniques in addition to supplies for treating minor to moderate injuries. Keep this kit easily accessible.

Before leaving your house, record the names and numbers of useful organizations:
Your pet's regular veterinarian
A veterinarian and animal hospital close to your vacation accommodations
The national animal poison control center
The local police department, Animal Control, the Humane Society, and local shelters. (If you and your pet have been separated, one of these organizations or an animal hospital may have located him or her.)

Be prepared to describe your pet. Have a high-quality, recent photograph of your pet handy. Make a list of your pet's identifying characteristics (specific markings, physical attributes and mannerisms that set your pet apart from others of the same breed).

As unlikely as an emergency might be, it's always best to be prepared.
