Think you'd love to have your pet travel with you on your next vacation? You're not alone. Many people love the idea of having pets accompanying them during their travels, and there may be other pet guests and residents at your vacation accommodations. Here are some ideas to maintain peace and harmony for everyone.

Consider your pet's temperament when choosing your vacation spot. If your pet doesn't socialize well with other animals, it may be best to vacation at a place where he or she will have minimal contact with other pets. Contact your host before booking – they may be able to make specific arrangements for your pet. In extreme cases, it may be best for your pet to refrain from traveling with you as these situations may cause undue hardship.

Observe the visual cues of other pets and their owners. If another pet is being restrained by their owner in the presence of other animals, it may be a sign to do the same with your own pet until you are out of range.

Introduce your pet to resident pets and other guest pets, if possible. Your pet may have an easier time getting along with animals he has met than those he has only seen, heard or smelled.

Monitor your pet at all times. He or she should be constantly supervised while interacting with other pets and any volatile situations should be defused before they come to a head. Your pet should be leashed when outdoors unless you are in a specific off-leash area, and even then the leash should be close at hand in case it is needed.
