Tourism Toronto has reinvented itself with a ‘brand’ new look

Toronto’s new brand identity was launched this past summer, promoting all that Canada’s largest city has to offer as a city and as Torontonians. The brand concept is a promise to the world about the city of Toronto; the “City of Imagination”.

The goal was to create a single Toronto brand and to develop an innovative way of communicating the city’s strong and dynamic identity to the rest of the world. This is part of a larger unified effort to define and promote Toronto's distinct identity and raise its profile as a major global tourist and business destination.

The Toronto Stories Campaign

Full page magazine ads featuring world renowned architect Frank Gehry and long time collaborator on Late Night with David Letterman, Paul Shaffer, ran in New York City, Chicago and Washington DC as part of the Toronto Unlimited campaign. In fact, on a recent show, Letterman held up and read from the New York Times’ Shaffer ad. Recently, the Sunday New York Times Style Magazine’s focus was travel fall 2005. There was a three page colour advertisement highlighting culture, architecture, dining and shopping in Toronto.

Toronto is alive with culture!
As the city’s famous museums and galleries undergo beautiful expansions and a new performing arts centre takes on majestic form, Toronto enters an era of cultural renaissance for all to enjoy. This Canadian city has fully embraced its creative arts community and prepares for the following dynamic programs and events:

Live With Culture – ongoing to December 2006
Creativity is everywhere in Toronto ― from a mural on a wall at a construction site to a night of opera, from a band at the neighbourhood bar to a film screening at one of many film festivals and everything in between. LiveWithCulture.ca is a web portal that celebrates the creativity which contributes to our city’s soul. Toronto culture is among the best in the world, and the hundreds of events listed in this website benefit residents and visitors from every walk of life.

The Lord of the Rings World Premiere – February 2006
J.R.R. Tolkien’s book trilogy has sold in excess of 200 million copies. Now, as an original theatrical epic, The Lord of the Rings arrives on stage in Toronto. An international creative team led by critically acclaimed director Matthew Warchus, and including award-winning designer Rob Howell and the celebrated choreographer Peter Darling has combined all three books into one must-see theatrical event.

Royal Ontario Museum expansion opens summer 2006
Renaissance ROM is the dramatic transformation of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) comprising over 300,000 sq. ft. of new and renovated space, almost doubling the number of objects that were previously on display. The Michael Lee-Chin Crystal is a beautiful new building designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. With six new Crystal galleries overlooking the street, the Crystal gives the ROM an extraordinary new outline covered in a luminous skin of aluminium and glass. The Crystal opens summer 2006 and the final phase completes in winter 2006/07.

New opera house opens summer 2006
The Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the first purpose-built opera house in Canada, will open in Toronto summer 2006. Located in the heart of the city, the centre will be the new home of the Canadian Opera Company and the new performance venue for The National Ballet of Canada. The centre will open up the entire operatic repertoire to Canadian opera lovers, with Wagner’s Ring Cycle set to have its Canadian premiere in 2006.
