As we gladly welcome the onset of Spring, many pet owners turn their
thoughts to planning a much needed getaway to the countryside.
Pets
Can Stay Certified Cottage & Chalet resorts offer private,
well-equipped accommodations in scenic locales, and an ability to
make guests with pets feel right at home. This month’s feature
highlights two properties that represent the best of East and West:
Tyrolean Village Resort in Collingwood, ON and Driftwood Village
Resort on Galiano Island, BC.
TYROLEAN VILLAGE RESORT - Collingwood, ON
In terms of accommodations that offer a true respite from the hectic
pace of city living, few can compare with Tyrolean Village Resort in
Collingwood, Ontario. Located at the base of Blue Mountain, Georgian
Bay’s only all chalet resort offers Swiss and Executive housekeeping
style chalets, and “a vacation experience unlike any other”.
A family owned resort for the past 50 years, Tyrolean Village has
established an array of services and amenities designed to suit a
full spectrum of interests. On-site volleyball, basketball and
tennis courts, a heated outdoor pool, kids playground and soccer
field provide fun for the whole family. In-house catering, spa
treatments and entertainment are also available, allowing guests to
be pampered without having to leave the comfort of their own chalet.
For visitors looking for a waterfront experience, Tyrolean Village
even has a private beach on beautiful Georgian Bay.
When it comes to pets, Tyrolean Village is truly in a class all its
own. In addition to offering treats at check-in and dog blankets and
bedding upon request, Tyrolean Village is the first chalet resort in
Canada to set up a dedicated ‘pet park’. This fenced pet play area
allows dogs to run off-leash (under owner supervision of course),
and is replete with picnic tables, small water pools, frisbees and
scoop bags – a true pet lover’s paradise! The resort’s partnership
with ‘The Bark Park’, just minutes away, provides pet guests with
access to spa and grooming treatments, doggie daycare and even
off-site excursions for their enjoyment. In addition to Tyrolean
Village’s accreditation with Pets Can Stay, it comes as no surprise
that they were the first resort to receive the ‘Pets Too!’ award
from ‘Hotel Fun 4 Kids’.
The resort’s chalets are well-appointed to say the least. Able to
accommodate parties ranging from 4 to 24 in size, the chalets
feature fully-equipped kitchens with microwave, fireplace, indoor
sauna or Jacuzzi tubs, floor to ceiling windows, and large decks
with gas barbecues and spectacular mountain views. Staying true to
its ‘open arms’ policy towards four-legged companions, the resort
allows travellers with pets in all the chalets, rather than
restricting them to ‘pet-designated’ units. “Pets are more than
welcome here at Tyrolean Village” comments Denis Martinek, the
resort’s owner. “They are invited!”.
Travellers looking to get away from it all this Spring/Summer need
look no further than Tyrolean Village for a wide array of things to
see and do. The Collingwood Elvis Festival and Collingwood/Blue
Mountain Jazz Festival are two of the larger upcoming events, and in
terms of outdoor activities, visitors can access caving/zip lining,
water sports at Wasaga Beach, fishing and boating in Meaford, and
walking, hiking and biking on Blue Mountain – all within minutes of
the resort. “We’re an affordable boutique chalet resort with a pet
friendly attitude!” adds Martinek. “If you are looking for a
vacation getaway for the ‘whole family’, then give us a call.”

DRIFTWOOD VILLAGE
- Galiano Island, BC
Considered the “gem” of British Columbia’s renowned Gulf Islands,
Galiano Island’s tranquility and raw, natural beauty offers stunning
sandstone formations, beaches and forests, and an array of wildlife
inhabitants including eagles, sea lions and killer whales to name
but a few. For the pet-loving traveller, Galiano is also home to the
“gem” of Gulf Island accommodations – Driftwood Village Resort.
Overlooking the ocean at the southern end of the island, this
cottage resort combines private, self-contained accommodation,
picturesque scenery and a love for pet guests that makes for an
ideal travel destination.
The resort’s beautiful landscape boasts forest and fruit trees, as
well as open grassy areas, providing pets with a endless array of
fascinating spots to investigate. Visitors can indulge their canine
companions in numerous dog walking areas within the immediate
vicinity, as well as two nearby off-leash parks (one of which is
oceanfront, for those dogs that are aquatically inclined). In
addition, the resort’s remote location provides a very safe
environment for pets to enjoy the outdoors, and not be exposed to
vehicle traffic.
The ten cottages that make up Driftwood Village are well
interspersed across the grounds, each with a unique set of offerings
that aptly mirrors the charm and personality of Galiano Island
itself. Guests can select from a range of accommodation, from cozy
studio cottages for two to luxury one or two-bedroom cottages (some
with jacuzzis), all with private bath, cooking facilities and TV,
but each bearing a distinctive décor including original art and
percale sheets. “Every one of our cottages welcome pets. No
restrictions.” explains Margaret Stember, Driftwood Village’s
resident owner/operator. “Many of our guests love to see pets here,
even if they are not their own. Moreover, we cater to pet owners who
are looking for privacy and self-sufficiency – like a home away from
home.”
For travellers looking to explore the island’s sights and sounds,
Galiano is home to a number of attractions, including bird walks, a
Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast, the island’s golf course, and a
craft/cooking market every Saturday during the Spring and Summer.
For those guests looking to relax and stay put, Driftwood Village
provides cottage fireplaces with complimentary firewood, comfortable
Adirondack lawn chairs, and a whirlpool/hot tub in the centre of the
gardens. “Our guests love coming back to Driftwood Village because
of the ambience.” adds Stember. “Every cottage is different, each
with its own private and colourful character, and the resort as a
whole has a very cozy, natural feel that really reflects what
Galiano Island is all about - not trying to be something else that
it isn’t.”
